It's Friday the 13th!!!!! Do you believe?

Image
Face it, you're screwed. Today is Friday the 13th — the unluckiest day on the calendar — so try not to crash your car, fall down a flight of stairs, set yourself on fire or do anything else that might compromise your well-being. And for God's sake, stay away from men in hockey masks. Friday the 13th occurs when the thirteenth day of a month falls on a Friday, which superstition holds to be a day of bad luck . The fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskevidekatriaphobia or friggatriskaidekaphobics (try saying those!!) The number 13 has been unlucky for centuries. Some historians peg the superstition to the 13 people who attended the Last Supper (neither Jesus nor Judas came out of that one O.K.), but ancient Babylon's Code of Hammurabi omits the number 13 in its list of laws, so the superstition dates back to at least 1700 BC. Thirteen is so unlucky, in fact, that in 1881 an organization called the Thirteen Club attempted to improve the number's reputation. At the

Inspirational Quotes from women

Those of you who know me well know that a passion of mine is to study the lives of important women of the past and present. I like to read their words, some of which are incredibly powerful. I have put here ten of my favourites (although it's really hard to choose) which aren't too heavy! Hope you enjoy them. If you have a favourite yourself, let me know. xx Jane Austen "There is nothing I would not do for those who are really my friends. I have no notion of loving people by halves, it is not my nature." (Northanger Abbey) Marie Curie "Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood. " Eleanor Roosevelt   "Women are like teabags; you never know how strong they are until they're put in hot water. " Indira Gandhi “There are two kinds of people, those who do the work and those who take the credit. Try to be in the first group; there is less competition there.” Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis "We should all do something to right the

A little motivation is what is sometimes needed!!

It Couldn't Be Done Somebody said that it couldn't be done, But he with a chuckle replied That "maybe it couldn't," but he would be one Who wouldn't say so till he'd tried. So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin On his face. If he worried he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn't be done, and he did it. Somebody scoffed: "Oh, you'll never do that; At least no one ever has done it"; But he took off his coat and he took off his hat, And the first thing we knew he'd begun it. With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin, Without any doubting or quiddit, He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn't be done, and he did it. There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done, There are thousands to prophesy failure; There are thousands to point out to you, one by one, The dangers that wait to assail you. But just buckle in with a bit of a grin, Just take off your coat and

Benidorm tobacconists warn of contraband tobacco on sale in British bars

Jan 9, 2012 - 5:33 PM They have warned that counterfeit cigarettes brought in from China can be seriously harmful to health Tobacconists in Benidorm have warned of a new wave in sales of contraband tobacco, particularly through British bars and restaurants in the town. Diario Información reports that the Civil Guard have discovered during the course of their investigation that a customer will select their chosen items from a price list which is displayed on the premises, and will arrange to pick up their cigarettes elsewhere the following day. The aim this way is to avoid the contraband merchandise being discovered if the business is searched. It’s understood that the cigarettes which are sold on the local black market generally come from Gibraltar, Andorra and China.
